How do we reinvigorate, static and stale institutions? The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is a world-class institution with an incredibly deep archive of publicly-owned art that has outgrown its aging structures, designed by the 20th-century mindset of the museum as a static institution conforming to traditional ideas of art. It is with this new campus, we sought to ask how an art museum can better serve the people of Los Angeles through an archive in perpetual motion. At the heart of the campus is the crystalline archive, pumping artwork in and out to the internal galleries for curated exhibitions or out to the droneport to be flown out for an external exhibition somewhere in Los Angeles. The new LACMA is designed with the citizen in mind, built so everyone can have access to culture.
